This time Luciano takes the stand.
We have already had occasion to speak of this wine on Garantito IGP, to be precise the 2008 Grecomusic in the summer of 2010, when there were three of us running the show.
I am happy to return to it, because the story is ongoing, though the winemaker has changed: Vincenzo Mercurio has replaced Maurizio De Simone. The confirmation that the wine reflects its maker comes from the is the stylistic continuity over the vintages despite the fact that the two winemakers involved, both excellent, are very different.
Grecomusc, instead follows its course, revolving around the minerlaity of the terroir of Taurasi, Bonito and Passo di Mirabella, where the grapes necessary to make a few more than 2000 bottles are picked.
One of the many pearls of Southern biodiversity, this grape had almost vanished, and survived thanks to the memories of a few old farmers who still had it. We have always liked the Contrade di Taurasi Project because of its logical, and not commercial rationality, which perversely contributes to making it commercially quite interesting.
Instead of making fiano, greco, or falangina like almost all the other small Irpinian wineries, the winery established by Sandro Lonardo, which is now run by his daughter Antonella and his son-in-law Flavio Castaldo, has worked rigorously with Aglianico, using natural yeasts after a meeting with Professor Giancarlo Moschetti, who has also joined the team. And as a white, this exciting project, which began in 2004.
Not even 10 vintages, but the first Grecomusic vertical, held at Posillipo at the end of 2011 did make some things clear: Foremost, the longevity of the whites grown on the volcanic soils of Irpinia. Second, the clean essential style of straight vinification in steel. Third, the strength and power of this white, which is sufficient that it was able to successfully follow, think about this, a Taurasi vertical held in Rome on January 24.
Grecomusic is an enticing wine, elegant, long, fresh, full bodied, and whose citrussy accents follow the fumé notes are very pleasant. It’s also a wine of terroir, not an invention, and fully expresses Irpinia’s terrific ability to offer wine lovers new prospectives. The journey is long from over.
